Jesse and Meridith are a married couple living in rural South Dakota. They both share an intense love for food and the natural world, which led to an interest in gardening and poultry. To put it simply, they just like growing things. Originally, they desired to grow enough food for themselves that they wouldn't need to purchase many groceries. When it became apparent that they could grow much more than they could possibly eat, they figured, "If we can grow all this for ourselves, and it tastes good, and it is healthy, why not grow it for other people, too?"
Jesse works as a biologist, focusing on water quality science and fish. His work often includes assessing the environmental impacts of agriculture, and this has led to a desire to produce food in a manner that has less of a negative impact on the natural world. He enjoys applying science to gardening and livestock production. For Jesse, everything is an experiment - there is no "right" way to garden. He is the primary planner for Medicine Gardens, spending countless winter hours researching veggie varieties and gardening methods as well as drafting the layout of the gardens, orchard, vineyard, and chicken area. If he isn't busy working in the gardens or chicken coop, you may find him wandering around the yard with a notebook and camera.
Meridith has spent time working as a cardiac sonographer and is currently attending nursing school as well as working a few shifts a week at the phenomenal local Italian restaurant La Minestra. She loves animals, plants, and is a tireless laborer in the gardens. She is the primary garden worker of the family and has a special touch to make things not only functional, but beautiful. Her weeding abilities and stamina are unparalleled, which is vitally important because Jesse's weeding abilities are not quite as renowned. You will find her in the gardens caring for the plants and flowers, or in the chicken coop picking eggs. She may also be found in the kitchen canning tomatoes and delicious jelly.
Jesse and Meridith also have a wonderful baby son, Henry, and two occasionally delightful dogs, Jet (yellow lab) and Mya (long haired Chihuahua). They enjoy pretending to help accomplish the many tasks required to keep everything working and growing. If Jet isn't barking at a neighbor, he can be found digging holes in the yard. If Mia isn't barking at Jesse because she thinks he is a neighbor, she can be seen spinning in circles. Despite their shortcomings, Jesse and Mer love them dearly.
